Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Definition:

California State University San Marcos acknowledges and accepts its responsibilities for protecting the rights and welfare of human subjects of research covered by this policy statement.

A "human subject" means a living individual about whom an investigator (whether professional or student) conducting research obtains (1) data through intervention or interaction with the individual or (2) identifiable private information.

This policy applies to all faculty, staff and students whenever they are supervising or conducting any activity involving human subjects, regardless of whether the research is funded, and regardless of whether the subjects are members of the University community. This policy applies to research conducted at other institutions by CSUSM faculty, staff, and students, even if that institution has its own review process.
