Interested in Becoming a tutor to earn your service learning hours?

Tutors are imperative to the success of Tutor Connection operated through San Diego County Office of Education – Foster Youth Services program. Tutors not only guide the youth toward a path of learning but they also establish important relationships which translate into real stability, progress and success. Tutor Connection has seen a steady increase in the test scores of repeat youth in the program, and a slow decline of placement changes in repeat youth who are tutored year after year.

Tutors are responsible for:

·  Minimum of 2 hours of tutoring per week

·  Reflection of tutoring experience

·  Academic assessment through pre/post testing

·  Progress Reports

·  Establishing Reading & Math Practicum

·  Attending weekly sessions

·  Working with teachers to streamline homework

·  Creating educational goals and objectives

As a part of the program, each tutor will be matched with a youth placed in the San Diego County foster care placement.  Tutors are required to complete 20 hours of service learning throughout one school semester.  (These hours can be used towards the required hours in the EDU 350 course, but not limited to EDU 350.)  Tutors will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the semester and will be able to use the experience gained through this services learning assignment as part of their portfolio.

The tutoring year runs from September – December and February -May and follows all scheduled school holidays. Most tutoring occurs in the foster homes located throughout San Diego County. Some special accommodations are sometimes made in the classroom and at Connected Through Kids center in Escondido. Children served through Tutor Connection can range from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

This program provides enriching experience for students interested in becoming future teachers and youth and the community.  This is a model program that was recently presented an award by President Jimmy Carter as a certified Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership program. Fingerprints and background check a must.
