What
is the MARC Program? |
|
| The
federal government has determined that Hispanic/Latinos, African
Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders are severely under
represented in the biomedical research workforce of the United States.
The MARC Program is intended to prepare students from these underrepresented
ethnic groups for admission into prestigious graduate programs. We
expect these students to complete their graduate training and join
the biomedical research workforce around the country. |
| |
What
are the MARC Program Elements? |
The
MARC Program will prepare students from underrepresented racial
and ethnic groups for professional research careers in the biomedical
sciences. The MARC Program will involve third and fourth year honors
students in an integrated academic and research environment that
will include: (1) participation in an eight-week Summer Research
Training Institute offered by CSUSM science faculty; (2) enrollment
in MARC Honors Courses; (3) participation in a Seminar Series;
(4) an opportunity to conduct research at CSU San Marcos or at
some approved external site; (5) comprehensive academic and career
advising; and (6) preparation for the Graduate Record Exam along
with mentoring in preparation of pre-doctoral fellowships. The
primary objective of the MARC Program is to place students from
underrepresented racial and ethnic groups into prestigious graduate
schools around the country and to support their eventual participation
in biomedical research. |
| |
Who is Eligible? |
| Hispanic/Latino, African American,
Native American and Pacific Islander students with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Juniors and seniors who plan to attend graduate school (M.S., Ph.D.,
or M.D. /Ph.D.) in biology, chemistry, psychology, computer science,
math, and physics can apply. |
| |
What
is the MARC Program Compensation?
|
|
The MARC Program will provide a $10,536 scholarship for living
expenses; it will also pay students tuition and fees. The MARC Program
will also provide $ 1000 to defray research expenses in the
laboratory where the students will conduct their research and fund
travel expenses to a national scientific research symposium. |
