Research Initiative for Scientific Enhancement (RISE) Program

What is the RISE Program?
The federal government has determined that Hispanic/Latino, African Americans, Native Americans, and Pacific Islanders are severely underrepresented in the biomedical research workforce of the United States. The RISE Program is intended to prepare students from these underrepresented ethnic groups for admission into graduate programs. We expect these students to complete their graduate training and join the biomedical research workforce around the country.

What are the RISE Program Elements?
The RISE Program will prepare students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups for professional research careers in the biomedical sciences. The RISE Program will involve students in an integrated academic and research environment that will include: (1) participation in an eight-week Summer Research Training Workshop offered by CSUSM science faculty; (2) participation in several activities to strengthen academic skills; (3) participation in a Seminar Series; (4) an opportunity to conduct research at CSU San Marcos or at some approved external site; (5) comprehensive academic and career advising; and (6) preparation for the Graduate Record Exam along with mentoring in preparation of pre-doctoral fellowships. The primary objective of the RISE Program is to place students from underrepresented racial and ethnic groups into graduate schools around the country and to support their eventual participation in biomedical research.

Who is Eligible?
Hispanic/Latino, African American, Native American and Pacific Islander students who plan on attending graduate school (M.S., Ph.D., or M.D. /Ph.D.). Sophomores, juniors, seniors and graduate students in  good academic standing who are pursuing careers in biology, chemistry, psychology, computer science, math, and physics can apply.

What is the RISE Program Compensation?

The RISE Program will provide support for living expenses of $8,000 for first year RISE Scholars (additional years of participation in the program includes a modest increase in this award), and $15,000 for graduate students. Tuition and fees will also be paid for graduate students. The RISE Program will also provide $1000 for undergraduates and $1500 for graduate students to defray research expenses in the laboratory where the students will conduct their research, and fund travel expenses to a national scientific research symposium.
