ACHIEVE!/Foster Care Project
The NLRC, in conjunction with North County Collaboratives is conducting an evaluation of the foster care system in North San Diego County.
 

BORDER HEALTH (2004)

In January 2004, the NLRC was commissioned by The California Endowment to conduct research on critical border health issues. The project is divided in two phases. The first phase will include organizational profiles, key informant interviews, and focus groups with health-related organizations working in San Diego and El Centro. The second phase of the project will expand the sample to other border regions such as Tijuana, Calexico, and Mexicali.  Phase two also will include a review of the literature in border health and an assessment of academic institutions doing research in the region.

 

CALIFORNIA JUDICIAL REVIEW (2002)
This project is funded by the Judicial Council of California to research and review cultural diversity in California's Family and Juvenile Courts.

 

CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO YOUTH NEEDS ASSESSMENT (1997)
The NLRC worked with the mayor's Youth Commission to undertake a needs assessment on multicultural youth in the city of San Francisco. Among the topics covered by the assessment were exposure to violence and cultural adjustment. The results revealed a high level of exposure to violence among youth in San Francisco. The data resulted in the introduction of new programs to address youth problems, such as exposure to violence and identity development.

 

CLEAN AIR INITIATIVE (2003)                                                                     

The NLRC was contracted by the American Lung Association (ALA) of San Diego and Imperial Counties to evaluate the Clean Air Initiative in the Imperial Valley and Mexicali border region. In collaboration with the ALA and the Clean Air partner organizations, the NLRC designed a survey instrument to measure changes in attitudes about clean air and to determine whether residents feel empowered to take action to reduce air pollution. The project is funded by The California Endowment.

 

CONFIA EN TI EVALUATION (2002-2004)                                  

The NLRC was contracted by Interfaith Community Services to conduct a two-year evaluation of its Confía en Ti migrant health program.

 

EDUCATION & CULTURAL COMPETENCY
This project, funded by an ACYF grant, provided cultural awareness training for Head Start teachers in San Diego County.

 

First National Conference on Drug Use Research Among Latino Populations (1998)
The NLRC held its first national conference on drug-use research focusing on Latino populations. Leading researchers were brought together to present the latest findings on the epidemiology and etiology of Latino drug use, as well as research findings pertaining to Latino drug-use prevention and intervention.
 

GO-MED (2006)

The Cultural and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) program at Palomar Pomerado Health is designed to develop a plan for healthcare workforce diversification. The ultimate goal of the program is to improve patient care by recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce able to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services. The NLRC will design tools for community needs assessment activities, train and supervise staff conduct assessments, and assist in drafting the implementation plan, focusing on cultural sensitivity components.

 

HABLANDO CLARO (2005-2006)

Clínicas de Salud del Pueblo contracted the NLRC to evaluate the Every Teen Counts program, a program designed to plan implementation of the Hablando Claro-Plain Talk model in the community of Brawley, California. The NLRC provided assistance with the design and facilitation of focus groups as well as technical assistance for the CSP staff on focus groups facilitation.

 

Hispanic Drug Abuse and HIV/AIDS Research Training (1998 - 2000)
This three-year collaborative effort with Yale University focused on a dual-site training program designed to increase the number of competitive and successful Latino recipients of extramurally funded research projects on Latinos, drug use, and AIDS/HIV. Trainee cohorts were trained in New Haven, Connecticut and in San Diego, California. View Training Videos
 

Latinas Vida Project

The Latinas Vida project is a major research effort funded by the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) to study the prevalence and patterns of various types of intimate partner violence among Latinas in North San Diego County.

 

MANA Latinas Mentoring Project (2001-2004)
This is a three-year evaluation of the national MANA "Hermanitas" Mentoring Program, funded by SAMHSA.

 

Mariposa Project - Phase I (2003-2004)                                                        

Mariposa (Spanish for "Butterfly") is a new program of the North County Child Study Center. A healthcare outreach program designed to meet the needs of Latino Children and their families.

 

MARIPOSA - Phase II (2005-2006)

The Tri-City Hospital Foundation contracted the NLRC to evaluate the North County Child Study Center Mariposa Program; a two-year program designed to address the complex needs of children 18 months to18 years of age with developmental and behavioral disorders through collection and analysis of data. The NLRC will develop data collection instruments to measure the community’s knowledge about developmental and behavioral disorders among Latino families.

 

MISSION PARK NEEDS ASSESSMENT (2005)

In partnership with the City of Escondido and the Mission Park Community Advisory Group, the NLRC is conducting a community survey to assess the needs, concerns, priorities and perceptions of residents in the Mission Park area.  This participatory-style community assessment includes the active involvement of residents and local “gate-keepers” throughout the assessment process, as well as CSUSM students who were asked to assist in the project as data collectors.  The assessment will target approximately 200 households in the Mission Park area. The results will be used to help guide program development and the allocation of local resources.

 

Parent Involvement (2002-2004)                                                 

The NLRC evaluated Parent University, a parent education program of the San Diego City Schools District.

 

Promotora de Salud Program (1997-1998)
The NLRC conducted a two-year evaluation of the "Promotora de Salud Program", a nationally-recognized program which focused on improving the health knowledge and practices of low-income female Latinas in Kansas City.
 

School Readiness                                                                

The NLRC has collaborated with Vista Unified School District and the North County Collaboratives to assist a low achieving school in the district with securing funds for a school readiness program.
