Dr. Núñez-Álvarez is the Interim Director of the NLRC. Dr. Núñez-Álvarez is a McArthur Scholar at the University of Minnesota chosen for outstanding academic achievement, for commitment to international studies focused on developing countries, breadth of experience and an interdisciplinary orientation. In addition to having a philosophical foundation on global peace and justice, Dr. Núñez-Álvarez is well versed in the history of Chicanos and Mexico-United States relations, with emphasis on immigration and border-related issues. She has a strong background in teaching extending across cultural groups, in English and Spanish, among various age groups and within a variety of educational levels.
Lastly, Dr. Núñez-Álvarez has extensive community organizing experience. Through various student, community and academic organizations, she has developed educational and social service programs to improve the lives of individuals in the surrounding communities. She received her B.A. in Social Sciences from California State University San Marcos, an M.A. and Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota. Her Ph.D. dissertation topic is on the construction of Indian and Mexican identities in Mexico and the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
