Early in my career I conducted research on a variety of issues related to community mental health and community psychology. My recent book chapters, articles, and conference papers emphasize our personal role in constructing our beliefs and understanding. Incorporating perspectives from Eastern and Western psychology and philosophy, I discuss the liberating potential of liberal arts education, psychotherapy, and meditation in helping us attend to our active participation in creating meaning.

My research and scholarship take place within the field of constructivist psychology, which relates convivially with social constructionism and some other post-modern perspectives. Click on the Constructivism button in the navigation bar to learn more about the general approach. My scholarship also recognizes an Integral approach to psychology, integrating and synthesizing perspectives on the individual, culture, society, and the contribution of the natural sciences, as well as the evolution of human consciousness. Click here to see a paper describing how I got interested in constructivist psychology and summarizing my research up to 1993. My main current areas of research and scholarship address several interrelated themes: Personal Construct Psychology (PCP), Zen meditation and Buddhist Psychology, and Language and Semantics. Click on the buttons in the navigation bar to the left to learn more about my work in each of these areas. I have included links to copies of some of my more recent conference papers and publications on the pages on each of my research areas. To see a complete list of my publications click here.
