Department of Kinesiology

Kinesiology refers to "the study of human movement." The current societal concern for the physical well-being of the American population, rekindled by the 2001 Surgeon General's "Call to Action to Prevent and Decrease Overweight and Obesity," has sparked renewed interest in the study of physical education and kinesiology. As such, the B.S. in Kinesiology at Cal State San Marcos prepares students for a wide variety of careers in the areas of rehabilitation, wellness, fitness, and education.

We are one of the fastest growing majors on campus, with over 600 KINE majors across our four options. We are proud of the individualized attention that our students receive, and our students will tell you that this makes our program unique compared to other CSUs. Our 1,400 square foot, state-of-the-art Human Performance Laboratory houses over $400,000 in new equipment that is used by our students for hypothesis-driven research projects in several upper-division classes. It's a good time to be a Kinesiology major!

**Kinesiology is IMPACTED beginning with Fall 2010 admissions.** This means that students wishing to declare Kinesiology as their major will need to meet certain supplemental admission criteria and then be selected for the program. The process is intended to be competitive and spaces are limited. We do not yet know how many spaces will be available for each of our four options, but students who meet the following MINIMUM criteria are encouraged to apply:

The following supplemental admission criteria will be used to determine acceptance into the Kinesiology degree program:

  1. Cumulative GPA from all coursework of AT LEAST 2.5.
  2. Grade of "C" or better in the following four courses (or equivalent):
    • BIOL 104: Principles of Biology: Human Emphasis (with lab)
    • BIOL 175: Anatomy & Physiology I (with lab)
    • BIOL 176: Anatomy & Physiology II (with lab)
    • KINE 202: Introduction to Kinesiology
  3. Students must declare their desired option when applying to the Kinesiology degree program and are not allowed to change their option while in the program.
  4. Applicants meeting the criteria above will be rank-ordered by GPA and selected based on the number of openings in each option at the time of application.

NEW STUDENTS applying to the university who have not met the supplemental admission criteria, can declare a "Pre-Kinesiology" major which will allow enrollment in the four courses listed above (these classes are restricted to Pre-Kinesiology and current Kinesiology majors).

NEW STUDENTS applying to the university who have met the supplemental admission criteria, can apply to the Kinesiology program with their application to the university.

CURRENT STUDENTS who meet the supplemental admission criteria may apply to the Kinesiology program for Fall or Spring semesters.

**details about the application and selection procedure will be posted as soon as we have them.**
