Projection of computer for whole group instruction: This will allow you to do whole group activities such as the spreadsheet and database activities listed on the project page. Whole group computer instruction also allows the teacher to introduce an activity that the students will later complete during their assigned computer time.
Group Projects: Student groups sign up for their computer slots during their group activities. There are a variety of stations such as research books, planning and organizing, art and the computer. Try to use other technologies in group projects such as cameras, laserdisc players, and keyboard word processors.
Templates: By creating documents that are already set up, students are able to complete computer activities much faster. Examples of templates are at Saddleback Valley School District in the Orange County Area and at North Carolina Web Site.
M&M Student Program: We have created a student facilitator web site to guide schools in setting up programs that help with the technology implementation in a class or the whole school.
Word Processors: Did you know that 80% of the work that students do on a computer is word processing? These units are inexpensive and students can transfer their writing to a computer for creating multimedia and/or desktop publications or connect to a printer and print out text. AlphaSmart portable keyboards have extended computer project time in classrooms I have worked with. Visit their web site or contact a representative for a preview of their products.
Works4Me Tips Library, sponsored by NEA, has many ideas for managing and using technology in classroom. They suggest sharing ideas and information with other educators at your site, district, and through their web page: http://www.nea.org/helpfrom/growing/works4me/tech/index.html
Reference Book: This is a great book to help with ideas and strategies.
