Multimedia Mentor Student (M & M s) Program
receives Golden Bell Award

Technology is an important part of the educational program at L. R. Green
School in Escondido. Students, teachers, administrators, parents, and
community
are involved in using technology as a tool to assist with learning. The
school has been designated as a model site for both Escondido District
and
the State of California for use of technology in education. Recently L.
R. Green was selected to be an "Apple Distinguished School." Success of
L.
R. Green School's technology program is partly due to the assistance of
Multimedia Mentor Students called M & Ms.
L. R. Green M & Ms Program has been developed as a result of
receiving
three technology grants since 1993. Through technology grants, equipment
and materials have been purchased to be used in all classrooms, K-8. In
order to help teachers work with the equipment and materials in
elementary
classrooms, the technology grants specified the development of a student
facilitator program called M & Ms (Multimedia Mentor Students).
Technology elective students are trained in the use of a variety of
technology
equipment such as scanners, camcorders, still video cameras, computers,
MIDI,
laserdisc players, CD ROMs and Internet. These students assist
other students in various grades, assist teachers in classrooms, and
develop projects, manuals, and trouble shooting guides. They act as
Multimedia
Mentor Students (M & Ms) as specified in the School Technology Plan
(TUP). This experience allows students to build self esteem and develop
leadership skills as they acquire useful skills for their future.
M & Ms have also traveled to other schools and the County Office of
Education in order to present and assist with technology. Presentations
have included HyperStudio, multimedia projects, Internet activities and
email. The technology teachers and parent volunteers have assisted in
making
these visits possible.
Schools that have seen the M & M s Program at L.R. Green School or
through
visits at their own sites, have often started this program at their own
schools. One school in the San Diego County area has used the M & Ms
Program as part of the recently awarded SB 1510 State Technology Grant.
L. R. Green School welcomes visitors to observe their technology program
by scheduling a visitation to our site. This packet has been published in
order to present information that will help in creating M & Ms
Programs
at other sites and to give information to the community about how this
student-centered
technology program has made a difference at L. R. Green School.
