DAY TWO
Explore site of the day: Web Cams

Introduction (15 minutes):

  • Make sure everyone signs in.
  • Review the evaluations from Day One and answer any questions on the goals of ILAST.

  • Explain the requirement to show progress on a project at the end of the 40-hour ILAST Institute

    CTAP Forum - Article Summary from Day 1
    1. Complete article and, using a word processor, summarize and reflect on it
    2. Place document into folder
    3. Be ready to post
    Introduce CTAP Online Forums and ask participants to post article summaries.
    CTAP Online Introduction to Forum (Note the handouts in the participant packet on pages 2.2-2.4). (30 minutes for Foundation, 60 minutes for PBL)

    The CTAP Forum is available for all of ILAST. To make the forum available for the institute groups, post a message to the Forum by 1) selecting Forums from the navigation bar in the Homeroom, 2) select New Topic, and 3) create a new topic and select the Forum to place the topic.
    *Critical Information Sheet Participants record their CTAP Online name and password.

    1. They post information from the article they read at the end of Day One.

    2. They summarize key points or share their response to the article's main points. They reply to a posting by another person. You may want to add several topics to post under (Favorite URL, Question and Answer for Search Activity).
    Standards and Assessment (60 minutes)
    Foundation Activities

    Explain what a search engine does. Discuss which search engines teachers currently use and why.

    3. Complete worksheet page 2.5--modify with subjects of your choice.
    4. Bookmark choices
    5. Take quiz at the website
    6. Search your topic in another search engine.
    7. Bookmark sites

    1. Visit Tekmom--kid-friendly search engines. KidsClick! is a search engine that lists reading levels.
    2. Point out search engines for specific curriculum areas. Note: The link to specialty search engines has a section at the bottom especially for teachers resources.
    3. Briefly introduce two other search engines. Yahooligans, Metacrawler, DogpileKidsClick! (Indicates reading level), Google, or Ask Jeeves for Kids
    4. Optional Follow-up Activity: Ask teachers to come up with a question that can be answered with a search engine. Participants can post question, answer and URL of answer in CTAP Online. These questions could be used for a search activity for students.
    PBL Activities
    1. Confirm subject of PBL
    2. Download standards to be addressed in plan, including ELD, Challenge and
    NETS Technology Standards
    3. Type (or Paste) chosen standards in SBIM template.
    4. Explain the features of a standards-based curriculum and "Backwards Instructional Design" (term explained in SBIM outline, Day 2, module 3)
    5. Determine if you have met Criteria for SBIM Standards and Topic. (See SBIM Outline handout)
    6. Determine learning sequence then write learning objectives

    Copyright and Ethics(15 minutes)
    Discussion of Acceptable Use Policies K12 Acceptable Use Policies.
     
    PBL group joins in, but may examine Use of Citations Citation Machine, MLA Format: (Examples), APA Format (Examples), instead.

    Break (15 minutes)

    ILAST Institute Projects (15 minutes): Discuss the fact that the overall goal for the ILAST Institute is to advance their proficiencies in the five areas of Instructional Technology. Each day they should be considering activities and projects that they would like to bring back to their classroom for their students. On Day Five of the Institute, each participant will share one project that they have developed or modified for their students. (Examples: CyberGuide, PowerPoint, HyperStudio, Filamentality). (PBL group will share the beginnings of a much more complex instructional unit.)

    Integrating Technology(45 minutes)

    Foundation

    Find standards-based lessons at SCORE (CA standards in all activities at all sites), Filamentality "Registry," WebQuest, Blue Web'n or Discovery Online Lessons. They are instructed to:
    1. Search for online activities, lessons, units for inspiration or modification.
    2. Bookmark promising sites, especially those with CA standards
    3. Use Backflip (Optional)
    4. Copy/Paste standards and tasks into a word processor document
    5. Modify activity
    6. Save in a word processor
    If they go to any site but SCORE, they will need to determine the standards that are being addressed in the lesson--more work than some will tolerate. Encourage them to stay at one of the SCORE sites.

    PBL is instructed to discuss, but not necessarily decide, the following:

    1. Performance based assessments
    2. Technology tools that support their assessment
    3. Culminating activity
    Remind them that the activities and assessments must meet Five Criteria for Authentic Assessment (See SBIM Outline handout)

    Day Two Lunch (45 minutes)

    Show a short clip from the George Lucas Foundation on Project-Based Learning.

    Collaborative Tools (60 minutes, allowing 30 minutes for each activity below)
    Foundation Activity (Note options)
    Introduce Hotmail--see handouts for all days pages 2.6-2.11.
    *Critical Information Sheet. Record password and name.

    1. Teachers set up a hotmail account.
    2. Send a message (to another participant), and read mail.
    Demonstrate how to access email from anywhere using Mail2web.
    Email Activity (30 minutes for Foundation)
    1. Practice E-mail and Use "Individual Address Book" Function.
    2. Email three favorite sites to workshop member/instructor
    3. Email instructors from home computer. (Add them to your address book)
    Break (15 minutes)

    Best Practices & Research Findings (45 minutes)

    Foundation Activity
    Print out the appropriate grade level evaluation form from the Schrock site. Teachers select a website to evaluate and fill out the form. On Day Three they will post their paragraph conclusion about the website they evaluated on CTAP Online.

    PBL Activity
    Review/Refine/Reflect on the following:
    Instructional Objectives (Students will be able to….)
    Technology Objectives (Students will be able to….)
    The Instructional Design (Note links in Day 3)
    -Constructivist Theory1, Constructivist Theory2, Constructivist Theory3

    Independent Practice and Reflection (30 minutes)
    During this time, the instructor acknowledges that participants may need instruction in specific applications, especially as indicated in the Day 1 Needs/Skills Assessment. Mention that ILAST will offer workshops for specific skills (and that the instructor or others in the institute may be able to tutor) in the following: digital photography, PowerPoint (PowerPoint tutorials can be found at http://members.home.net/donmayfi/ppresources.html), AppleWorks, KidPix, Inspiration, webpage makers.

    Evaluation (10 minutes) Day 2 use yellow evaluation.
