A
Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is defined by federal
agencies as an accredited U.S. college or university
with at least 25 percent Hispanic full-time student
enrollment.
The HSI program is part of an effort by the federal
government to provide assistance to colleges and
universities serving traditionally underrepresented
groups. Through other programs, federal aid is available
to historically Black institutions and to tribally
controlled institutions.
There are approximately 250 HSIs in the U.S. and Puerto
Rico serving more than 500,000 Hispanic full-time
students. Almost half of these institutions are located
in California and Texas.What
are the benefits of becoming an HSI?
Hispanic-serving
institutions are eligible for millions of dollars in
federal grants – nearly $100 million in 2004.
Students are eligible to apply for scholarships,
internships and academic advancement programs.
Faculty and staff are eligible to apply for research
grants, teaching/professional development opportunities
and student support programs.
Institutions are eligible to apply for resources that
benefit all students, including community development,
healthcare, science, technology and academic
preparation. |
