Established in 1499, the Universitat de Valencia is one of the oldest universities in Europe. Valencia has around 60,000 students and almost 3,500 lecturers and professors located on three campuses.

Students can choose from more than 90 departments offering classes in the humanities, social science, and science.

The University also offers non-credit classes in Spanish and Catalan for students interested in improving their language skills.

The campuses offering social science and humanities classes are located in the city of Valencia.

The city of Valencia is located on the Mediterranean coast about 190 miles east of Madrid. With a population of about 800,000, Valencia and a very large student population, Valencia offers all the benefits of urban life in a coastal environment.

The city of Valencia dates from 137 BC and features architectural styles from Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. Valencia is a maritime city with excellent beaches and neighboring fishing villages.

The city and the university offer many cultural and recreational activities including musical performances, museums, and sports. With about 80,000 students living in Valencia, there are many places for students to meet day and night.

Valencia is famous for its Fallas celebration from March 15-19 each year. The entire city participates and the fallas, gigantic wood and plaster models are built in the streets. On the final night the fallas are set ablaze amid a fireworks display.

Valencia has excellent public transportation and good access to Madrid and Barcelona.

Program Features

  • Exchange students can enroll in any class provided they have the prerequisites.

  • All classes are taught in Spanish (or Catalan) so a high level of proficiency is Spanish is required to participate in this exchange.

  • Spanish language courses are available at a small additional cost.

  • Catalan language classes available.

Eligibility

  • Upper-division status (completion of 60 units) required for participation.

  • GPA of 2.75 or above.

  • Advanced level of proficiency in Spanish.

Fees and Expenses

  • Regular State University Fee paid to CSU San Marcos. No tuition or fees at University of Valencia.

  • On-campus residence: $715-$850 per month, depending on type of accommodation, including meals. Shared apartments available $200-$450 per month

  • Health Insurance: $36 per month.

  • Cost of meals and personal expenses will vary, but average $600 per month.

How to Apply

  1. Visit the University of Valencia website for International Student Exchange to learn about the University.

  2. Consult with the CSU San Marcos Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 to determine if you are eligible for this program.

  3. Consult with a faculty advisor in your major department to determine if the Valencia courses will count toward your major. If so, complete a Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.

  4. Obtain and complete an Exchange Student Application form and submit it to the CSUSM Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 along with copies of all your academic transcripts.

  5. Application Deadline
