Korea University was founded in 1905 and today has an enrollment of more than 33,000 students. The beautiful park-like campus with classic architecture is located in the capital of Seoul.

Korea University is one of the top-ranked, “Ivy League” universities in the country with 18 colleges and 81 departments. It is particularly strong in the humanities and Asian studies.

Over 95% of the 1,100 faculty members have a Ph.D. and many received their education abroad.

Korea University emphasizes international education and is attracting many students from around the world.

Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is fast becoming one of the major commercial centers of Asia. With over 600 years of history. It is the heart of Korea’s culture and education as well as politics and economics. Seoul is unique in that historical sites such as Gyeongbokgung Palace and modern cultural facilities coexist in harmony. Seoul is a world-class city with numerous amenities and shopping districts such as Myeong-dong and Apgujeong.

The long U.S. presence in Korea and the many commercial connections with the U.S. have brought many Americans to Seoul. Consequently, it is relatively easy for Americans to live and travel and Korea.

The country offers many interesting historical and cultural sites to visit. In addition, Seoul offers a variety of entertainment, restaurants, and places for students to gather.

An excellent public transportation system makes it easy to navigate the city and surrounding region.

Program Features

  • Two program options are available:

    The International Summer Campus (ISC) is designed as a six-week study abroad experience, for students interested in a short-term experience in Korea. Students may select from over 50 courses taught in English in the fields of Economics, Business, Sociology, Political Science, Humanities, Korean Studies, and Korean Language.

    The Semester Exchange Program. Students may select from among hundreds of classes taught in English in fields such as Biology, Business, Computer Science, Economics, Political Science, Korean Language and Culture.

  • All work transfers back to San Marcos and can be used to fulfill all graduation requirements.

  • Korean language courses available.

  • On-campus dormitory for exchange students.

Eligibility

  • Upper-division status (completion of 60 units) required for participation.

  • GPA of 2.75 or above.

Fees and Expenses

  • Regular State University Fee paid to CSU San Marcos. No tuition or fees at Korea University

  • On-campus Dormitory: $900 per semester.

  • Health Insurance: $37 per month

  • Cost of meals and personal expenses will vary, but average $500 per month.

  • Consult with the CSU San Marcos Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 to determine if you are eligible for this program.

  • Consult with a faculty advisor in your major department to determine if the Korea University courses will count toward your major. If so, complete a Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.

  • Obtain and complete an Exchange Student Application form and submit it to the CSUSM Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 along with copies of all your academic transcripts.

  • Application Deadlines
         April 1 for Fall, Summer
         October 1 for Spring


Soonchunhyang University

CSU San Marcos students may study for one semester or one full academic year, at Soonchunhyang University near Seoul as exchange students. Exchange students pay their regular fees to CSU San Marcos but no tuition or fees at Soonchunhyang University. Students in any major are eligible to apply to the Soonchunhyang University which offers Asian and International Studies programs in English.

Soonchunhyang University was founded in 1970s as a medical college and became a full-fledged university in the 1980s. Today the University offers bachelor’s master’s and doctoral degrees in many fields of humanities and science.

Soonchunhyang University is located in a small town on the central west coast of South Korea in the Seoul region. Most of the professors in the Asian Studies and International Studies programs have earned their Ph.D. degrees in the U.S. and are accustomed to teaching international students.

Program Features

Two program options are available:

1. The Korean Studies Program is designed for students interested in Korean history, culture politics, and language. Students may select from over a dozen courses taught in English in the fields of Economics, Business, Sociology, Political Science, and Korean Language.

2. The International Studies Program. Students may select from classes taught in English in Asian history, international relations, and international law.

  • All work transfers back to San Marcos and can be used to fulfill all graduation requirements.

  • Korean language courses available.

  • Internship opportunities available.

Eligibility

  • Upper-division status (completion of 60 units) required for participation.

  • GPA of 2.75 or above.

Fees and Expenses

  • Regular State University Fee paid to CSU San Marcos. No tuition or fees at Soonchunhyang University. 

  • Soonchunhyang University offers a unique opportunity for exchange students willing to serve as Cultural Interns, helping Korean students with English language studies. In exchange for this service, Cultural Interns receive:

  • Airfare up to $800

  • Free room in international dormitory

  • Living expenses of $125 per week.

Health Insurance: $36 per month

How to Apply

1. Visit the Soonchunhyang University website to learn about the University.

2. Consult with the CSU San Marcos Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 to determine if you are eligible for this program.

3. Consult with a faculty advisor in your major department to determine if the Soonchunhyang University courses will count toward your major. If so, complete a Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.

4. Obtain and complete an Exchange Student Application form and submit it to the CSUSM Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 along with copies of all your academic transcripts.  Applications from Soonchunhyang are generally not available until early April, so student must plan based upon the information from the preceding semester.
