| For more than 50 years the Fulbright Program has offered scholars
from the United States the opportunity to teach and conduct research abroad while enabling
scholars from abroad to come to the United States. There are a number of Fulbright
programs, but the Fulbright Scholar Program is the one for CSU San Marcos faculty members
interested in lecturing or doing research abroad.
In March of each year, the Council on International
Education Exchange (CIES), which administers the Fulbright Scholar Program for the
Department of State International
Information Program, publishes the
announcements of the opportunities that will be available. Applications for most Fulbrights must be submitted by August 1 for programs that begin the following year (e.g.,
application for the 2009-10 academic year are due August 1, 2008).
Opportunities for lecturing and research are available in virtually every academic
field in a wide range of locations. While local language fluency may be required for
some programs, often lectureships are available to those who speak only English.
Fulbright living and transportation stipends are quite generous and allow for spouses
and children to accompany scholars abroad. The duration of Fulbrights is anywhere
from a month to a year. Many faculty members combine Fulbrights with sabbatical
leaves, which is allowed under Fulbright rules.
The Office of University Global Education distributes Fulbright booklets and applications
to interested faculty members each April, but you can obtain this information about the Fulbright Scholar Program directly from CIES
at their website. |
