HES School of Economics and Business

CSU San Marcos Global Business Management students may study for one semester at HES Amsterdam School of Business in The Netherlands as exchange students. Students in the Global Business Management Option are eligible to apply and will take classes approved by the Program Director. Other Business students may apply with the permission of their department chair or academic advisor.

The Hogeschool voor Economische Studies (HES), known abroad as HES Amsterdam School of Business, was founded in 1867 and prides itself on a highly respected history of educating first-rate business professionals. It’s new educational complex is located in the southern part of Amsterdam. HES has more than 5,500 students and 300 faculty members, making it one of the largest schools of its kind in the Netherlands.

HES Amsterdam attracts hundreds of students each year from about 100 partner institutions around the world because they can choose from a wide variety of business courses taught in English.

Program Features

  • With prior approval, coursework will fulfill business major requirements.

  • The business-related subjects are taught in weekly blocks of two hours each. Apart from attending lectures, students are expected to spend a considerable amount of time on preparation for classes and exams. Exchange students are advised to compose programs of no more than 20 contact hours weekly (8-10 courses), which is considered an appropriate and manageable workload.

  • Basic Dutch language courses available as part of the exchange.

  • Free orientation before classes start; includes information on residence permit procedures, the distribution of timetables, a meeting with the Country Coordinator, tours and social events.

Fees and Expenses

  • Regular State University Fee paid to CSU San Marcos. No tuition or fees at HES Amsterdam.

  • Visa Fees: $532

  • No On-campus residence. Apartments $500-600 per month, depending on type of accommodation

  • Health Insurance: $37 per month.

  • Cost of meals and personal expenses will vary, but average $500 per month.

How to Apply

1. Visit the HES School of Economics and Business website to learn about the university.

2. Consult with the CSU San Marcos Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 to determine if you are eligible for this program.

3. Consult with appropriate advisor in the College of Business Administration to determine if the HES Amsterdam courses will count toward your major. If so, complete a Study Abroad Credit Approval Form.

4. Download the Application, Arrival and Visa forms at the HES Exchange Information website. Complete and submit it to the CSUSM Study Abroad Advisor in Craven Hall 3200 along with copies of all your academic transcripts.

5. Application Deadlines
     May 1 for Fall
     October 1 for Spring

Eligibility

  • Business Major.

  • Upper-division status (completion of 60 units) required for participation.

  • GPA of 2.75 or above.
