Markstein 104 is a state-of-the-art
distance learning classroom, and currently the main area for
distance education using two-way compressed video, typically
referred to as videoconferencing. Markstein 104 supports
seamless interactivity between the instructor and students
in this room and other locations around the world. It allows
the integration of standard teaching tools and media into
the curriculum, with complete control and the ability to
archive course sessions for on-demand distribution.
Some room features include:
- Two-way compressed video over IP.
Tandberg 6000 videoconferencing unit has many
advanced features. Bridging multi-point conferences can
be done via the Tandberg or through the CSU system
service (CENIC).
- Archiving of classes. Encoding
via MediaSite and Windows Media allows the creation of
video and video synchronized with screen at both
high-bandwidth for on-campus delivery and low-bandwidth
for delivery to broadband users off-campus.
- Large capacity. This room is
rated at 60 students.
- Multiple video cameras that
can be pointed, tilted, and zoomed (PTZ) with touch
screen controls for the instructor.
- Audio input for instructor and
students. The Shure ConferenceOne system works in
both push-to-talk and gated (auto muting) modes. A
wireless microphone for the instructor allows freedom of
movement.
- Operator control for complex
events, with a remote system at the back of the
room.
- Computer lab possible too,
with laptop computers for student use.
- Enhanced lighting for best
production values, using a cool, low-power LED-based
lighting system. Controls are integrated into the
control system.
- Attractive professional
environment. Telephone in room for support.
- Attention to acoustics. Use of
acoustic treatment on walls and carpeting on floors to
reduce echo. Reduction of noise sources, fans, etc. Most
equipment is located in an adjacent control room.
