Background:

 

I started my teaching career at CSUSM in 1997 and am a full time professor in the Department of Sociology within the College of Arts and Sciences.  I’m active in the Faculty Mentoring Program, served as Chair for the Pacific Sociological Association’s Practice, Applied and Clinical Sociology Committee (2005-2006),  served as the Associate Director for the Association for Criminal Justice Research (2002-2003), and served on the Faculty Advisory Council in 2003.  I am a member of the California Faculty Association, the Pacific Sociological Association, and the California Sociological Association.  I also served as a faculty judge for the Student Research Program (2004), sat on the Presidents Advisory Council in 2003-2004, and served as a Henry Brakebill Committee Member.  I’ve conducted several program evaluations focused on education and improving educational outcomes for K-12 students (mentoring, violence prevention, teacher training and academic preparation).

 

Research Interests:

Inequality and the construction of social class in the United States; Educational inequality, Juvenile delinquency, youth gang culture and violence prevention/intervention; Disproportional sentencing in the justice system, sentencing alternatives and substance abuse issues among various social classes; Media impact on the construction of reality.
