Three Rivers Petroglyphs
About 30 miles north of Alamogordo, in what appears to be a very barren area, is Three Rivers Petroglyphs. Getting there is fairly easy, but the area was very empty of population, so you can enjoy it pretty much on your own. The petroglyphs are more than 1300 years old, though there is clearly some markings that were made by more recent explorers through the area.

The estimate by BLM is that there are over 21,000 petroglyphs in the immediate area -- just along this ridge, almost every rock had some drawing. |

Clearly the '1895' is added much later. Unfortunately there were no placards or other information to help you separate out what might be original and what was added. |
