Globe, AZ
When I had gone through Globe, AZ about 9 years ago, it was the first place where I had ever seen the destruction that stripmining can cause, but that depressing sight had been counter-balanced by the efforts of historic preservation. The area that I refer to as Globe, is actually several small towns that run together. There are varying levels of preservation of the historic districts, and the historic district of Globe looked to be having a promising revitalization when I was there 9 years ago -- this time it looked like that revitalization wasn't working and I have no pictures of it. Most of the pictures below are actually of Miami, which is a few miles west of Globe.
This Google satellite view gives a sense of the extensiveness of the mining.

Just as I was leaving town, a house that was near where I had taken the first picture above, caught fire. |
