The Universidad de Costa Rica/ Modern Language Studies Abroad Program (UCR/MLSA) offers an outstanding Spanish language and culture program in beautiful San Jose, Costa Rica.

Founded in 1814 as the University of Santo Tomas, the University of Costa Rica (UCR) was created in 1940 and opened its doors in 1941.

Today, UCR is one of the most prestigious universities in Central America with an enrollment of over 30,000 students.

The main campus is located in San Pedro de Montes de Oca, 3 kms. from downtown San Jose in an area of San Jose called San Pedro.  The campus is  surrounded by a developed neighborhood that offers  services, shopping, and entertainment.

Students stay with Costa Rican families selected by UCR/MLSA.  Some of the families have hosted students since 1992.  Students are truly welcomed and cared for. Families provide two meals a day, laundry service, and conversation in a Spanish-speaking environment. Students will be placed with families close to the university or near good transportation to the university.

In the afternoons, students have free time.  URC/MLSA will organize activities as well as  visits to the museums in San Jose and nearby cities such as Cartago. Additional optional weekend excursions can include trips to Volcano Poas and Cataratas de la Paz,  plus a one-day cruise to Tortuga Island.
