To import clips:

• Make sure that you are in the import video mode (via the camcorder icon).
If your camera is connected (normally via a firewire cable), the device controls will be available.
• Use the controls to queue the video to where you would like to start importing the clips from the camera to the computer.
• Press play to start the video rolling and then click the "Import" button to start the importing process.
• You can either stop the import by clicking the import button again, or the stop button (repeating the process for your next clip), or you can continue to import until all your footage is imported.

iMovie will create new clips every time there is a timecode interruption meaning that every time you stopped recording a shot, iMovie would end the clip and start a new clip the next time you had pressed record on the tape.
Next time you are filming, keep in mind that if you stop and start the record on the camera for each shot, importing into iMovie will be simple. Each shot will be separated into its own clip.

Clips will show up in the top-right section provided you have the "Clips" button selected below the section.
