Adding Text:
To add text to your project, find the button that looks like a letter "A" inside a filmstrip. Hold this button down to see the various ways FCP supports using text and other effects (note, these effects can also be found in the Effects tab of the browser).

For our purposes, the most common selections will be "Text," and "Scrolling Text." Under the "A" button, use the drop down menu to hover over "Text."

In the pop-out menu under "Text," you will find the effects "Text" and "Scrolling Text." "Text" is stationary while "Scrolling Text" will start the text from below the screen and move upward during a period of time (like the end credits of a movie).

Once a text effect is selected, the viewer will show what the text will look like on the screen. The viewer's background will be a gray checkerboard pattern. This means that the background is transparent so when you place it on your timeline, the background will show through to whatever video (or black screen) you have on the video track below.

Located at the top of the viewer window is the Control tab. This tab is where one can type the desired text along with changing the font, size, color, and position.
Note: FCP does not use a text wrap feature meaning one will have to manually (by pressing return) place words on a line below if the title runs off screen.
Hint: grab the top of the control tab and move it away from the viewer window. The tab becomes its own window where one can then see the effects easily between the viewer and the control tab.
