Soboba Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Luiseņo (originally Cahuilla)
Established: 1883
County: Riverside
Acreage: 5,915
Population: 450
Location: In eastern Riverside County, near the town of San Jacinto. Soboba is located
where the San Jacinto River cut terraces near the low mountains to create deep ravines and
several alluvial plains. Once a Cahuilla reservation, most residents are now Luiseņo -
somewhat removed from other Luiseņo reservations. The rocky terrain is home to a couple
of horse ranches, and old chapel and cemetery, health services, a newly built pre-school,
and offices in the Ahmium tribal hall and education center. The casino is hard to miss
with its large parking lot. The Ramona Pageant takes place a few miles away in the Ramona
Bowl.
Library: Currently, the library for the Soboba reservation is the
fully electronic library in the DQ University building. DQ was established
in the early 1990s and the library is open 9:00 to 5:00 or when DQ staff are
around for night classes. Gloria Wright, former DQ Director, helped to
develop the computer lab with its ten computer stations that are fully
networked with internet access. The webpage, designed by an
attorney/anthropologist friend of Soboba, provides links to many electronic
sources - Library of Congress, California Digital Library, Internet Public
Library, Federal Indian Law, etc. Some full text databases are accessible
for students but access to books and journal articles is cumbersome. Rita
Reynolds, Head Tutor for Soboba and hired in June, 2002, has been working on
plans to develop a library that will focus on tribal archives and language
restoration.
