Bishop Reservation
Ethnology-Language: Owens Valley Paiute and Panamint
Shoshone
Established: 1912
County: Inyo
Acreage: 877
Population: 1,437
Location: In the Owens Valley at the easterly base of the Sierra Nevada mountain range,
near the city of Bishop.
The Bishop reservation is situated amongst dry valleys, with mountains on both sides -
both green and bare. What was once a 65,000 acre reservation was diminished to the current
877 acres when Los Angeles "bought" the land for the needed water in Bishop
Creek and Owens River in order to feed the Los Angeles Aqueduct in 1913. Buildings include
the tribal offices, education center, community center, museum and Head Start.
Library: Bishop's library is unstaffed with less than 1,000 volumes. The
Education Director, Shawn Bengochia, oversees the library and plans to pursue grants to
update their collection and staff it part time. A new classroom with a reading room will
serve as an expanded library.Even Start: Dolly Mañuelito, a Bishop
tribally enrolled member, coordinates a library that serves their family
literacy program on the Bishop reservation and strives to incorporate
language and cultural literacy throughout their curriculum.
