Big Pine sits at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada in the high desert of Owens Valley.
Rectangular parcels dot the eastern side of the town of Big Pine, many built under the
auspices of the Owens Valley Indian Housing Authority. A small casino opened prior to the
Proposition 1A controversy and closed during that period. Some horses are raised and used
for back packing trips into the Sierras. A quiet, small community still finding its voice.
Library: The library is located in a small room within the reservation's
K-12 school. The collection has about 1,500 volumes and a nearby room has a computer lab
of about eight computers, with internet access on one of them. Networking the computers
was identified as one of the priorities for the Education Center. There is no library
staff person, but, the Director of Education, Rose Denver, has plans to apply
for tribal library grants and staff the library.[ View Photos of this Reservation ] |
