CCAE & CSUSM                                         September 1998

Dear SUAVE Teachers,

Welcome to another exciting SUAVE adventure as we kick off 1998-1999!  Once again we have an exciting line-up of in-service workshops, after school programs, a performance series (new!), and individualized coaching for your personal and professional development.  For those of you new to the program, here are a few helpful hints to get you started:

  • Classroom teachers are always in charge of classroom management and discipline.
  • Coaches meet your needs by helping you develop ways to teach your curriculum through the arts.  in other words...SUAVE is not an add-on.
  • Be sure to take time to plan with your coach.
  • Be flexible.  You might need to try things a few times.
  • Take risks!
  • Always return to:  "What are the children learning?"
  • The coaches will always be returning to the question: "What is the teacher learning?"
  • Communication and collaboration goes a long way.

The SUAVE experience is an adventure!  Enjoy the journey.

Professor of Education, CSUSM
