Step 1:
Read the text.

Step 2 :
Identify key concepts (3-4 at most), using a phrase.

Step 3 :
Identify terms which describe these key concepts.

Step 4 :
Locate these terms in the Library of Congress Subject Headings List. If you do not find the exact match for these terms, try to think of other terms which could describe your key concepts.

Step 5 :
Write in those terms found in the thesaurus which describe your concepts in the proper space marked DESCRIPTORS. Descriptors (or subject headings) are terms which identify concepts using controlled vocabulary.
