Subject: Glass Ceiling
I'm in the careers module and I'm writing my paper on women and the glass
ceiling. I'm going to argue that the reason why greater numbers of women
have not been able to penetrate the glass ceiling is because women
are still the primary care givers in this society. Employers do not
like employees who take off time from work. Women have to leave work
early or arrive late because they have to take the kids to school,
doctor appts., pick up kids from soccer practice or stay at home from
work entirely when they are ill. Employers perceive this as lack of
dedication to the job, so because of this women don't get the
promotions.
Response:
Subj: Re>Glass Ceiling
I think that your thesis statement about women still not being able to penetrate the glass ceiling is interesting. I'm not sure, however, that it is due solely to the fact that women often have to leave work because they have to take care of the kids (doc
tor appts., illness, soccer practice, etc.) and employers don't like that. Could there be other factors involved, such as lack of education, not being assertive enough, or not speaking the same "language" as men? Are you going to take a look at
the career advancement of the Mr. Mom's out there? I heard there was a govt. commission on this very subject. Good luck with your paper.
